Recording Studio
In the four years since its birth, The Department of Safety has a rich history as a recording facility. Dave Matthies operated his “Vibe Control Studio” here for a couple years, producing a long list of classic albums. Karl Blau & Phil Elverum have engineered albums for themselves and others in our venue. Ryland Bouchard holed up for a winter and recorded his controversial new masterpiece Good World. Evan Williamson has also operated a studio space, working with a wild variety of genres and artists for his Murder Mountain collective. Kevin Erickson ran things for a few years there, inspiring young local bands to document their songs and working on an audio book for a guy for like 3 years.
In the winter of 2008/2009 Karl Blau and Phil Elverum, along with the new resident workers, stripped the studio and started from scratch, painting the floors and walls and reconfiguring the layout. 4 dump runs worth of debris were removed! Now there is a rad 1” analog 16 track studio, as well as a computer. Mostly it is getting used for the productive resident workers’ own projects, but perhaps one of us will be interested in working with you.
